Top care, close to home.

Mitral valve repair is a highly specialized procedure that requires the best medical team.

The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology recommend referring mitral patients to a surgeon with at least a 90 percent repair (vs. replace) rate.

Our expert Heart & Vascular Institute team is close to 100 percent. And with local offices and clinics across Connecticut, you don’t need to travel for the best care.

Even if you’re at high risk for open-heart surgery, our team can offer innovative options to help you.

Do you need our team?

The mitral valve regulates blood flow between two of the heart’s pumping chambers. Like French doors, both sides need to close just right. If they don’t close properly, the valve starts leaking.

When the mitral valve doesn’t work correctly, your heart might not pump enough oxygen-rich blood to your body.

Common symptoms of a diseased valve may include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Chest discomfort
  • Migraines

There are three types of mitral valve disease:

  • Mitral Valve Regurgitation
  • Mitral Valve Prolapse
  • Mitral Valve Stenosis

Once we have your diagnosis, we can begin the path to treatment.

At the Heart & Vascular Institute, our goal is to repair your living valve whenever possible. When we can restore your valve to its natural form, it doesn’t wear or tear. It also resists infection and lowers your risk for complications.

But not every patient is a candidate for mitral valve repair. If the valve has deteriorated to the point where repair is not possible, replacement might be the best option. In either treatment path, we’ll guide you through this process together.
