Help for lung cancer
Our lungs are an essential part of our respiratory system, powering a life-sustaining gas exchange that allows in oxygen the body needs to power itself and filters out the carbon dioxide it does not need.
Lung cancer may occur when toxins are introduced to the pink lung in tissues, such as:
- Chemicals in cigarettes
- Products of combustion
- Air-borne particles from pollution or occupational exposure (such as asbestos)
Smoking – or being around second-hand smoke – and working or living in an area where the air contains asbestos, radioactive gasses or other metals can increase one’s risk of lung cancer. We estimate that approximately 85% of lung cancers are caused by tobacco use.
If your physician suspects you have lung cancer or you have been diagnosed with the disease, you can speak with a lung cancer navigator at the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute about what to do next. Our goal is always to provide the latest treatment options to address the cancer and help get you back to doing the things you love as much, and as quickly, as possible.
